Llano Recycling J. A. Lingle, a former Mason student and graduate of Austin's School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, has recently been employed at Llano Special Opportunity Recycling center. He and several other clients, as well as the staff, are losing their jobs at the end of October, as the Recycling Center is having to close due to the prices dropping so low they cannot re-coup costs to send cardboard for recycling. Mr.
City Taxes Letter to the Editor, I personally want to thank the City Commissioners for listening to me and others and then unanimously voting to keep my city property taxes the same next year as this year. As I told the commissioners at the September meeting, I have lived on a fixed income and in a house that is basically the same as the day I bought it 25 years ago. It seems strange to me though, that any county resident feels they have any right to criticize commissioners who voted ...
When I was in the 4th grade (we still had recess back then) when the bell rang we would race to the closet where they kept the baseball and bat. Whoever got their hands on the bat and ball first got to pick their team and go first at bat.
Mother’s Quick Easy Rolls courtesy: Henrietta Fritz I’m always looking for new ways to make biscuits and rolls, and this recipe sounded interesting so I made up a batch of them. I’m glad I did and I think you’ll be very happy with them as well! Simple, easy, requiring no special ingredients; they’re right in the Practical Baker’s wheelhouse. Ingredients: 1 cup milk ¼ cup shortening ¼ cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon salt 3 cups A/P flour 1 teaspoon salt Process: ...
Sorting Through All the Pieces... Assembling the content for a weekly newspaper isn't something that happens on a whim. I've spent 20 years working with writers and photographers, cultivating content that I feel our readers want, need and deserve. I go to great lengths to try and provide a broad spectrum of opinions and viewpoints that will benefit the community as a whole.
City Revenue Taxes UP? Or Not? Folks, last week’s paper had “Comments” and “Corner” columns from some of the Mason city commissioners. If you have not read these columns, I urge you to do so now for the information that they contain—and do not contain. The Mutual Admiration Association of the Mason City Commissioners was in full display in that one commissioner wanted to pat another one on the back.
City Agenda Commissioner Robin Lee is requesting the addition of two agenda items for the October 21 City Commission meeting that, if passed, would create a finance committee composed presumably of himself and one other commissioner -- in effect creating “super” commissioners and “regular” commissioners. Commissioner Lee further states analysis of the new landfill is in urgent need. At this point, we believe it is important that each commissioner make a public, on-the-record com ...
Stuff Happens A tragic chain of events In the first part of September this year while my wife and I were visiting Utah and Wednesday the 9th I was notified by my sister in law that my power was off at the house here in Mason and according to my freezer had been out for three days. So the very next morning I called the city of Mason and was informed that the automatic payment that was due on the 5th got returned because my checking account was frozen.
Fake News? I see fake news is alive and well. Reading the past week’s paper with not one, but two, diatribes about ‘so-called’ climate change, I had to laugh. It really doesn’t matter if we all agree on climate change or not. It’s happening with, or without, your belief. Or acceptance. That there’s still a market for such willful ignorance is unbelievable.
Quick and Easy Bread Sticks courtesy: Sara Hennigan As the name implies, these are quick and easy, and will be consumed by the dozens. They do require a bit of kneading, and they are a bit of a mess to make, but the results are well worth the clean-up! Ingredients: 1 cup of Greek, plain yogurt 1 ½ cups of self rising flour (That’s it, folks; that’s really all there is!) Process: Preheat oven to 500 degrees Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl Dump out onto a wel ...
