If the Earth is Warming, Why Did We Just Have a Record Cold Snap?
A reader of this column recently asked me why we just experienced record cold temperatures in Mason County, given that the average temperature of the Earth is increasing as a result of increasing levels of greenhouse gases (especially carbon dioxide) in our atmosphere. To understand our recent record cold snap, it is first important to understand the difference between weather and climate.
Pet of the Week
Talk about "man's best friend", meet Diesel! This fellow has had a pretty rough time of it so far but he is still a super lovable guy who we think is about 4. Diesel is an owner relinquish and Second Chance Mason Animal Rescue's newest rescue. He was taken in by a very kind family in Mason County.
The Second Chance Mason Animal Rescue (SCMAR) purchased 2.76 acres near the city landfill in 2015 to build a no-kill animal shelter and dog park. The dream is still alive, albeit, a bit slower than hoped. According to Nancy Wooldridge, fund-raising has been slower than expected, but the Board of Directors of the SCMAR, has resolved to begin construction of the dog park in 2021.

Our unusual, prolonged cold snap this week has readers wondering about freeze damage to plants, and also about how trees sense that the time is right to leaf out and bloom in the spring. Native trees and plants rarely experience any trouble with our winter freezes, because they are adapted to our local climate.

The Unexpected Beauty and Diversity of Lichens
The dramatic granite and gneiss outcrops of Mason County are often covered with colorful lichens, as are most of our trees. This is great sign of our clean air, as lichens are very sensitive to air pollution. If you drive from Mason to one of the large cities to our east, such as Austin or San Antonio, stop and look at the oak trees along your journey.

Purchase price is important, but it is not the only factor when buying a home. Consider the following “costs” when choosing a place to live. Cost of Travel Your home is your starting point for everywhere you go. How much time does it take to get to work? Where is the nearest grocery store?
