The Mason Lions Club met on March 2 at Nachos for their weekly meeting. Per their motto of ‘Service’ the Lions have been busy working on Ramon Park, in memory of Pepe, and sons Charlie and Trey. Lions Club members, City of Mason employees and many volunteers have been busy, leveling the land for the new park, clearing trees and vegetation, pruning the larger trees, and digging holes for the new playground equipment. Clay Lindsey donated the playground unit last month, and the Lions have ...
After Success of Unmanned Mars Rovers, What’s Next For Space Exploration?
By almost any measure, the unmanned NASA Mars rover program has exceeded virtually all expectations. The rovers have functioned nearly flawlessly, and have worked for years beyond their expected useful lifetimes. NASA’s five Mars rovers—Sojourner, Opportunity, Spirit, Curiosity, and Perseverance—together have been sending beautifully detailed photographs, data, and even sound recordings from Mars since the 4th of July, 1997.
***NEW LANDFILL GRAND OPENING CEREMONY TODAY AT 3:30PM*** The City of Mason will be accepting trash at the new landfill beginning at 8:00AM on Thursday, March 11, 2021. We are so excited that this project is complete, and we are all so proud of this new asset for our city. Gwen’s Beef Enchiladas
Mexican food is still one of my favorite foods. I could probably eat it every day. I have been known to eat enchiladas for breakfast. This is one of my family’s favorite recipes. This is the dish my kids used to request for their birthdays. I usually make it for Christmas every year and it is really a pretty simple recipe.
Exotic Ungulates in the Hill Country
In the 1700s, Spaniards introduced a number of exotic animals to what is present day Texas and Mexico, including cattle, horses, sheep, goats and pigs. None of these animals were native to the Western hemisphere. When the settlers of northern European ancestry began moving into the Hill Country in the early to mid-1800s, they brought more of these animals with them, all things we now refer to as livestock.

Some Texas Icons Haven’t Been Here All That Long
When you think about iconic Texas animals, the Nine-Banded Armadillo is probably high on your mental list. But did you know that armadillos are actually relatively recent immigrants to Texas? In 1880, a biologist by the name of Edward Drinker Cope wrote a paper, published by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., titled “On the Zoological Position of Texas.” The point of the paper was to determine the boundaries of the major biological realms of North America—where east meet ...
Texas Farm Bureau Launches Winter Storm Resources Web Page
Now that fields have thawed, Texas farmers and ranchers are evaluating their crops and livestock and estimating the economic impact of Winter Storm Uri. The damage is apparent in the vegetable and citrus crops grown in the Winter Garden and the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. But the frigid temperatures also impacted other crops, dairies, livestock, and poultry across the entire state. “Although we don’t know the total economic losses to Texas agriculture, we know the damage will be treme ...
Spring Means Outdoor Activities
March is here and hopefully spring is close. As I was driving around I saw green grass. The last several weeks it has been terrible, the worst winter storm in our lifetime. I just hope and pray that you are safe, have power, and water. It’s time to think about outdoor activities.
Mason's Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women "of a certain age," who absolutely insist on enjoying life to the fullest, have en masse crossed "Alaskan cruise" off their bucket lists after last week's frigid ordeal. Many of the members moved here from other parts of the United States and have seen this kind of weather before, but they had hoped to dodge that particular bullet for the rest of their lives.
