October is here bringing the chill of fall in the air, pumpkin spice coffee, the scent of a wood fire, and Halloween. Okay, the first three haven’t happened yet, but Halloween is on the way. That means that it is time for ghost stories. Several residents suggested Hill Country Real Estate as a likely place to do a search for ghosts.
What makes a good chili? It depends on who you ask, but Laura Coad of San Angelo just might know. She finished second at the Ladies State Chili Championship of Texas last year. Organizers of the Wild Game Dinner are looking forward to serving a delicious variety of game to a large crowd this Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Blanco County Show Barn in Johnson City. This year’s fare is fried Axis, wild game chili, whole roasted hog, wild boar BBQ, etouffee, fresh homemade sausage, fried shrimp, catfish, shrimp mac and cheese, salmon, pork cutlets, brisket, fried taters, along with bacon wrapped quail and quail legs.
After an absence of more than a year, the Rain Bird Gallery is reopening. Mike Walker is looking forward to opening the doors on Oct. 1. The gallery has been open by appointment for several weeks. They plan to have a grand reopening later in October. “We have a lot of unique things that you won’t see anywhere else, and people love to come by and see those Mexican benches with the old Mexican doors.
The Blanco Panther Band competed at the Hill Country Marching Contest at Fredericksburg High School Saturday, Sept. 28. The Blanco band performed their 2019 show Cryptomundial by Luke McMillan. The band won 1st Place Best Overall 3A Band, as well as, 1st Place 3A Marching, 1st Place 3A Music and 1st Place 3A Drumline.
Just a 45-minute drive away from Blanco, you can visit the largest commercial caverns in Texas: The Natural Bridge Caverns. In 1960, four St. Mary’s University students, Orion Knox Jr., Preston Knodell, Al Brandt and Joe Cantu were convinced that large caverns existed below the property’s natural 60-foot bridge. Bill Dupont, FAIA, a San Antonio Conservation Society-Endowed Professor is the director of the UTSA Center for Cultural Sustainability in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning. He designs graduate coursework in historic preservation that has set its sights on the Twin Sisters Dance Hall for its class focus this fall. Dupont’s class kicked off a semester of coursework at Twin Sisters Dance Hall Wednesday, Sept.
