An old proverb states, “Don’t change horses in midstream”. The Edmiston family, proprietors Bronco Sue Custom Hats, did just that. They left their life in Georgetown, Texas, for the lure of ranching in Mason County to bring up their daughter in the ranching tradition established by Chip Edmiston’s family in the 1890s.
The places that leave impressions on us as children never really leave us; we take a bit of the spirit of those places with us in our hearts. Lisa Cullings Polk, owner of The Thing Is Boutique in Mason, loved the wonderful shop her Aunt Mimi owned when she was growing up in Pennsylvania.

Johnson City has become quite the place to be on the weekends! Great restaurants, live music, breweries, and more are drawing people to the boyhood home of the late President Lyndon B Johnson. Now that things have returned somewhat to normal, visitors are returning to this quaint little community, and they are exploring all of the wonderful shops and storefronts that Johnson City has to offer. One of the newest is Old Annex Market.
Five years ago, Bart and Debbie Burkhard had a vision of turning the Old Blanco County Courthouse Annex in Johnson City into a place where local business owners could thrive and grow. Their plan was to offer beautiful office spaces at affordable rates so that small businesses could afford to succeed in Johnson City. When they purchased the building, it was a maze of small rooms and had been used for years for various county offices.

Hill Country peach orchards have seen a few challenging winters these last years, and like every season, the harvest depends on the rainfall and cold temperatures of the dormant months for a healthy, productive summer. But this year’s crop will be a unique one due to an unprecedented week-long winter wave of snow, ice and bitter-cold winds. In February 2021, the Hill Country saw record-breaking freezing Winter Storm Uri devastate many areas.
