It always seems that as spring begins to add color to our landscapes with the wildflowers and budding trees, the local calendar also becomes much more active with special events and fundraisers. With multiple concerts, activities and dinners it is sometimes hard to choose which to attend and support, and while all of them are important to the complete and vital community we want, it is a challenge to fill our calendars with all of the opportunities.
Although February was a short month, Second Chance made great progress! We were successful in rescuing and placing 6 stray and abandoned animals, with 4 of them being at high risk for euthanasia. A total of 9 dogs were placed in permanent homes. Four were adopted directly through the organization and 5 of the sweet puppies who were born in the Mason pound facility in December 2018, were adopted immediately after transfer to a coalition shelter outside of this county.
On Tuesday, March 5, a large group of some of the finest citizens of Mason gathered for a dinner and celebration of volunteerism in our community. There were 230 volunteers from 8 to 98 years young who regularly give of their time and talents to support the many different non-profit groups that make our town rich and lively. Everyone enjoyed themselves visiting and eating a delicious meal served by Nacho’s Cafe, and there was a brief talk by Kim Jackson and Jess Irwin about the particular ...
The Study Club enjoyed a delicious lunch with samplings which will be served at the Study Club’s upcoming April 28th Tea. Hostesses included Mariana Davis, Diane Evans, Martha Henry, Johnny Heidelberg, Joan Lindley, and Pam Scott. Two presenters (in photo with Vice President Joyce Mutschink) delighted the members with stories of the Underground Railroad and jewelry with a message.
Storytime is held Mondays at 10:30 A.M. in the Kid’s Zone of the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library, 410 Post Hill St. Children ages 2-6 are welcome and should be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Weekly stories are led by Carol Lampman. The story on March 18 will be Not a Box by Antoinette Portis.
The Mason tennis team captured the Regional Championship last week by beating San Saba in the finals to earn another trip to the State Team Tennis Tournament in San Antonio. This is the first year the tournament has been held in San Antonio and with that came some changes in play format, site locations and the overall atmosphere of the tournament.
On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, Riata’s monthly membership meeting was held at The Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. Hostesses were Tony Hurlbut, Mona Lois Schmidt and Nonie Stringer. Delicious desserts were served and enjoyed by all. The speaker for this month Jess Irwin, President of Mason County Habitat for Humanity (HFH) was introduced.
Acting Boss Lion Michael Murphy opened the March 5 meeting of the Mason Lions Club by welcoming Remedios Silerio as a guest of the club. Galen Thorne arranged the program presented by Tonya Spaeth Ahlschwede, the 452nd District Attorney for Edwards, Kimble, Mason, McCulloch and Menard Counties. There are several different varieties of spring wildflowers beginning to bloom around Mason, and although everyone is anxious to enjoy a great crop of bluebonnets this year it is important to remember that there are other blooms that fill out the whole range of colors in our part of the Hill Country.
Results of the San Angelo Livestock Show and Sale: Mason had 33 total entries from 14 4-H members. These 33 entries included five steers, 15 sheep, five hogs and eight goats.
