Me, myself, and why To some readers it may seem like I spend a lot of time bashing California because of all the silly things they do out there. For the record, I’d like to point out that it only seems like I make fun of California a lot because I make fun of California a lot.
Lots in a Name… Brits have long been viewed as folks who seem bent on probing details of “whys” on many topics, some of them unlikely. Maybe it’s because they’ve been around a long time. Like the Farmers Insurance commercial, they “know a thing or two because they’ve seen a thing or two.” Many of them reach “lathered status” when another name is added to the list of potential royalty “throne-holders,” even though the probability of reaching “number one” is ab ...
Memorial Day is May 27. This is the day designated to honor those veterans who died in wartime service to their country. Take a moment to remember them. The cemetery will have many flags at graves. There will be a special program Sunday afternoon, June 2, at the Art West Cemetery to honor Ernst Jordan. Men’s choir will practice at the Art United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 28, at 6. Last week there was an error in the date of the Eckert Reunion.
Two. What a strange little word. Born out of “twa” and “zwei” and “duo.” But pronounced as “too.” You…and you too. One more than one. Not that there’s anything wrong with one. The lone wolf. A solitary oak. One roadrunner. The sun. One is the number expressing unity. Forming a whole. Undivided. After all, it takes one to get to two. There’s no way around it. Some twos stay two forever. Two Inca doves. Two red birds. Two swans. Two ...
Standing Tall, and Falling Down... All of us, as we make our way through life, strive to be our best. We learn lessons from our parents, our siblings and our friends that help mold and shape us. Those lessons are reinforced by teachers, pastors, day care workers and Sunday school teachers.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Muffins courtesy: Jiffy Mix In my effort to get as many folks as possible to do some baking, I’ve been researching lots of recipes to see if there is a really quick and easy way for busy cooks to put some home-made goodies on the table. The Jiffy Mix company has been around a long time, and they make a lot more mixes than just Corn Bread Muffin Mix!
This month is special for the Library Book Club--we’re having two meetings instead of one! We just finished a lively discussion of Where the Crawdad Sing by Delia Owens, and Nan Larrimore brought delicious dip and crackers. But we’re not done yet--we’ll meet again on our regular day, the last Tuesday of each month--to discuss The Which Way Tree by Elizabeth Crook.
Crazyfornia Back when I was a kid, Lee Majors starred in a television show called ‘The Six Million Dollar Man.’ Majors played the role of Colonel Steve Austin, a test pilot who was pretty much totaled in a plane crash, and then rebuilt using mostly after market parts made of titanium and nuclear waste, or something.
Majoring in Majors… A minister friend--aware of ever-growing complications and mounting tonnage at the trough of trivia--often used the expression from the pulpit, in staff meetings and in conversation. He felt strongly about “keeping the main thing the main thing.” It was a serious challenge made so often that friends often referred to him as the “main thing minister.” It’s pretty clear--no matter where our focus centers--that his admonition has been largely ignored.
I hope all mothers had a great Mother’s Day. Mine was wonderful. After a doctor visit last week, John took me to my favorite Italian restaurant that he strongly dislikes. He suffered through lunch while I feasted on Eggplant Parmesan. Saturday, daughter-in-law Crystal cooked a wonderful dinner. Scott and Megan helped me celebrate.
