We’re in the middle of a gorgeous wildflower season and the return of many bird species, and I always want to know their names. If you need help in your own discovery of our flora and fauna, the library has excellent field guides for wildflowers, birds, snakes, mushrooms, stone artifacts of Texas Indians, and more in our non-fiction collection, all available for checkout!
The cutting edge
You know that scene in a horror movie, where the young girl is home alone at night, and she hears a noise in the basement, so she decides to go down there and check it out, even though she knows there’s a murderer loose in the area, and murderers in horror movies love to hide in basements waiting for young girls?
Say What? Cursive Back?...
The news that cursive handwriting is returning to elementary school curricula is being roundly applauded, perhaps equal to ovations that welcomed Dolly back to Broadway.
Some of us thought cursive instruction had been “written off” in recent years, replaced by fingers fleeting across tiny keyboards on iPhones, iPads and such.
No one is more exuberant than my 106-year-old Uncle Mort.
I hope your Easter weekend was a success. Our family met in two groups and it was easier on the old cook. It gives us more time to visit in a small group. We will admit that the most fun was the great grandbaby visiting. He is so precious. His smile melts your heart.
April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

Waste Land?
Mason’s far from it.
And April is far from being “the cruellest month.”
However, one thing’s the same.
April has been known to bring spring rain.

In this week's edition, there is an article from the Puncher Band Boosters. They are encouraging supporters to join the organization, as their numbers have dwindled in recent years, and only a handful of parents and supporters are now carrying on the many tasks of the group, including organizing the annual Queen's Coronation.
One of the things that the Band Boosters have done as a fundraiser for years is the Community Birthday Calendar.
Although Mason suffers from a lack of current economic activity and employment opportunity, this deficit is largely made up for by the quality of life it provides. ‘Quality of Life’ is a term that describes the standard of a community or person’s health, comfort, and happiness in their daily life experience.
Organically Mason
Dear people of Mason,
On March 31st I was in Mason for John Henry Hofmann’s memorial service. This was not my first trip to Mason. Beginning in 1988 my now deceased husband, Glenn George Capps, and I went to Mason numerous times. In 2006 we were married in Mason. Then in 2017 my mother-in-law, Ann, and I held a memorial service for my darling George in Mason.

This is not exactly in line with a “baker’s” series of recipes, but it is so easy, so delicious and since it does require baking in the oven, I thought you might find a good use for it. It makes quite a few, and they do well if you freeze them after you’ve baked them (and if there are any left over to freeze!).

Well, the book sale is over, we’ve vicariously trekked the Appalachian Trail, and now we can refocus our energies on our Camp Discovery play area. The fencing is progressing, and we’re moving towards the completion stage of the infrastructure. We’d like to have a small checkerboard table and a planter on legs that kids can plan, so if you’re a woodworker or carpenter and looking for a project, give me a call at 347-5446!
