Happy Birthday, Uncle Mort… Uncle Mort, who attains age 107 come July 4, issues requests for “no talking” and “no chore assignments” about this time every year. It’s no bother to Aunt Maude. In fact, she looks forward to the week or two annually when her hubby is in deep thought. She charitably calls such interludes “thought.” Others might more accurately say he’s scheming, trying to figure out how to cash in on his birthday without appearances that he’s cashing in o ...
Bits of Art It is thundering as I write this Sunday evening. We are hopeful that it will rain enough to measure. It would be great if we welcome summer on June 21 with rain. Class Meetings continue on Wednesday evenings at the parsonage of the Art United Methodist Church. Soup is served at 6 with the meeting to follow. The Art United Methodist Church Men’s choir will practice Tuesday, June 25. Since June has five Sundays, the Mason Ministerial Alliance will have a Fifth Sunday Servi ...
The days are clear, Day after day, When April’s here, That leads to May, And June Must follow soon: Stay, June, stay! - If only we could stop the moon And June! ---Christina Georgina Rossetti O well. Nobody can stop time. That’s the way it goes. First your money. Then your clothes. But less is more. The hotter it gets--- Less is better. Such as haiku. So much can be said with so little words. Butterflies Flit in a field of sunlight That is all ...
Monday's regular City meeting saw a full house at the Eckert Civic Center. The crowd indicated early on that they were there to participate and hear the discussion regarding the decisions regarding the City landfill. Mayor Brent Hinckley opened public comment by asking Commissioner Sue Pledger to explain to the crowd her reasoning on raising the possibility of using a transfer station trash solid waste operation rather than a Type 1 landfill, the plan Mason has been moving toward for the la ...
Even Corpus Isn't That Far from Mason... Last week, I spent Wednesday through Saturday in Corpus at the Rio Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Though Corpus is four hours drive away, I realized that it really isn't that far away when you're from Mason. Obviously, we had several people in our Mason group from First United Methodist.
Herbed Drop Biscuits courtesy: The Practical Baker If you read my columns on a regular basis, you’ll notice that I publish a lot recipes for biscuits and rolls. This one is a combination of a couple of recipes I’ve made before, plus quite a bit of “tweaking” on my part to get just the right flavor and texture.
The Second Step program will begin on Friday, June 14, from 2:00-3:00 P.M. in the Stribling Room. This curriculum for young children develops social and emotional skills such as listening, self-control, and empathy through fun games, activities, and crafts. The program will be offered every other week on Fridays and is free to attend.
Brave men Most Texas historical markers are located along the highways of the Lone Star State. You see them as you drive by, but few actually stop and read them. They commemorate events that occurred before most of us were born, and hardly seem relevant to many people today. They’re random snippets of ancient history, relegated to lonely stretches of road in a land that has miles and miles of lonely stretches of road.
THE IDLE AMERICAN On Growing Greatness… A retired school superintendent--weary of the sameness of approaching his job in the traditional manner--dreamed of serving in an unlikely place. The school was in a swamp long since drained, and locals said alligators hadn’t been seen there in years. During his professional years, the dreamer said he took on challenges daily, hoping to prevail most of the time.
Next Sunday is Father’s Day. Take time to do something special for the father’s in your life. As this is written on Sunday evening, we are watching the rain circle around us. The cool breeze was great. But, rain would have been nice. We survived a busy weekend. My mother’s family, the Kensings, had a reunion on Saturday.
