Putting Down or Putting Up?
Retired pastoral buddy Tex Luther and I were having a Monday morning debriefing breakfast. As regular relief preachers for pastors on vacation or congregations with pastoral vacancies we often get together to share our previous day's experiences. Tex had supplied a church whose pastor had just accepted another call. It was a congregation notorious for having had a passel of hassles, resulting in splits among the members and revolving pastors.
What is the definition of permaculture? Originally, the word “Permaculture” came from the combination of two words: “permanent” and “agriculture.” Two Australian men—Bill Mollison and David Holmgren—coined the term in the 1970s. Permaculture is an agricultural philosophy that allows us to use the resources readily available around us to their fullest potential. The principles of permaculture include observe and interact, catch and store energy, obtain a yield, apply self-reg ...
Summer heat is really here. We were blessed with cooler temperatures for a few days but summer is back. I have to water my garden every other day as most of it is in raised beds. Tomatoes have slowed down, but we are still enjoying our fresh vegetables. We had our great grandson, Tanner, visit for the weekend.
The Teardrop
One of my role models when I was a kid was Patrick McManus, who wrote outdoor humor in the bigs, like Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, and Sports Afield. He also published quite a few books, and my favorite was ‘A Fine and Pleasant Misery.’ It was full of stories about camping, real camping, with tents and campfires and bugs and rain and suffering.
On July 20 the Mason Lions Club met at Nachos for their weekly meeting. Any ladies or gentlemen who are interested in joining the Mason Lions Club and serving the Mason community need only ask any Mason Lion! The Lions welcomed as guests Jim Lyles and David Lampman, guest of Lion Will McCann. County Commissioner Lion Will Frey brought the Lions up to date on the courthouse projects, particularly the status of the damaged trees on the north side. Like all of us, Lion Frey regretted that ...
Songs of the Summer Dog Days
The ancient Greeks noticed that when the Dog Star Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major, was in the same part of the sky as the Sun, they could expect to experience the hottest days of the year. In this alignment, Sirius (which is the brightest star in the night sky) can be seen briefly just before dawn as a morning star.
The regular monthly City Commission meeting was held on Monday, July 19th at 5:30PM. We had a relatively short meeting, but a productive one. First on the agenda was the request from Mason County Habitat for Humanity for the City to allow them to rent seven RV slots at the City Park in Spring 2022 for a ten week period at a reduced rate beginning on or about February 26th and ending around May 8th.
Fears of Nature are Greatly Exaggerated and Mostly Unfounded
I recently read an article by a woman who described her visit to a tall grass prairie remnant in Kansas, and the utter joy she felt by simply walking among the grasses and wildflowers and experiencing what much of the middle of the country used to look like. But then she described a conversation she had with a waitress at a diner just down the road from the prairie.
Our last day of Summer Reading was on Friday. Thank you to everyone who participated this year! We would like to thank Mason Bank for their funding of Read-to-Swim. We are truly fortunate to have their support for our Summer Reading. Tomorrow July 22nd, the library will host Retro Video Game Night at 6:00.
Hawaiian-Style Chicken
Summer is prime vacation time and I think a lot of people are making up for last summer. For this week’s dish we are going across the ocean to Hawaii. It may be our 50th state but it is one of our most diverse. Hawaii’s culture is strongly influenced by North American and Asian cultures, in addition to its Polynesian culture.
