Fredericksburg, TX (8/14/20)— Hill Country Memorial today announced Jayne Pope, Chief Executive Office was inducted into the Huron | Studer Group 2020 Fire Starter Hall of Fame. The award was presented during the 18th annual What’s Right in Health Care® virtual conference, Aug. 11-12, 2020. “Jayne exemplifies what it means to be a healthcare hero,” said Debbie Ritchie, president of Huron’s Studer Group business.
Hill Country Memorial has been recognized as one of the “best maternity hospitals in the U.S.,” according to Becker’s Hospital Review, receiving Five-Star Ratings for its birthing and delivery care. HCM was one of only eight in Texas on Newsweek’s annual list of best maternity hospitals, that includes 231 hospitals across 36 states.
During the Mason/San Saba football game on September 11th, Fellowship of Christian Athlete Huddles from both schools will be competing in a friendly fund raising challenge. Each School will be taking donations at the gate during the first half of the game. The school who raises the most money, wins the challenge. After the game, each team will meet on the field to pray together and the winner will be awarded a plaque to signify the win.
Farmers and ranchers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to sign up for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) by Sept. 11. “There is still funding left, and many farmers and ranchers in our area could really use the help,” Mason County Farm Bureau President Will Frey said.
This pretty kitty might have more of a pep to her step if she knew someone who wanted to give her a forever home! Lily is about 5 years old, spayed and fully vaccinated. Lily appreciates a nice meal and a good brushing! She is on the lazy side of the spectrum, but can kick it into gear every now and then!
In 1892, the Texas legislature passed a law declaring that if a man left the payroll of a railroad, he had to be paid all wages owed him within 15 days. The railroad, controlled by robber baron Jay Gould, went to court—and prevailed when a Texas court held the new law unconstitutional.

Recovery of a Texas Icon: The Texas Horned Lizard
Most Mason County residents born in the 1960s or earlier have fond memories of playing with abundant Texas Horned Lizards in their yards or in open areas around town. These lizards were usually called “Horny Toads” or “Horned Frogs,” although they are lizards rather than amphibians. Their slow gait, easy-going personalities, and delightful appearance (to many, they look like miniature dinosaurs) delighted children of all ages.
Menard-Kimble-Mason TRTA local unit will hold its first meeting for the 2020-2021 school year on September 3 via virtual Zoom meeting at 4:30 p.m. All members with internet will receive an invitation from Sherry Hubbard via email.
