It would seem that for the past few months there has only been one issue that the City has been dealing with, if you rely entirely on the comments in this paper and the conversations around town. In fact, there are a number of areas that have needed continued attention from the City staff and the elected officials, and one of those is the proposal of an annual budget for the coming year.
At Monday night's City meeting, the Richard P. Eckert Civic Center was once again packed to the rafters. And, once again, the topic of so much interest was the solid waste disposal plans of the City of Mason. Commissioner Robin Lee, the only dissenting vote at the July City meeting for a Type 1 Landfill, had expressed concern that much of the information used to make that decision had either been incomplete, or was erroneous.
I had one final task with WinterFisch, but due to a super busy spring and early summer it got away from me. This task was to wrap up this fun annual fishing event with prize awards, a great big thank you to our local and out-of-county sponsors, and a thank you to the team that helped make the opportunity a success. WinterFisch is a winter Rainbow Trout fishing opportunity that is administered statewide by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).
Vince Lombardi, legendary football coach for the Green Bay Packers during the 60s, said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” In the community of Mason, hard work, dedication, and determination are a way life, inside and outside of the classroom.
Over the course of four days the Mason Tennis Association hosted its annual Mason DR Pepper/Tennis Outlet Open on July 18th – July 21st. The Junior division brought in over 240 entries and included players from all over Texas. Players competed in singles on Thursday, doubles and mixed doubles on Friday.

In my previous Commissioner’s Corner columns, I discussed findings of the analysis of waste disposal options for Mason. This information was not available to the City Commission nor to the public in time for the July 15 City Commission meeting. The previous columns described the errors in the Blue Oak permit, the failure to consider alternatives at the outset, and the failure to perform a financial analysis of waste disposal options.
Boss Lion Michael Murphy called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM at Nacho’s Café. Visitors this week included Meg and Ella Canfield, Jimmy Bratton, and Carol Reardon. Lion Brent Hinckley had the program this week and he could not be at the meeting, so Lion John Palacio took his place. Lion John gave an update on the City of Mason, starting with the recycling center.
Tonight is Meet the Teachers at elementary, believe it or not, but it’s also time to sign up your children ages 0-4 for the Book Punchers Family Book Club! The goal is to read 100 books in a year with your child. Every child who signs up will get a Book Puncher backpack and a free book.
I have been quiet for the past couple of weeks because on July 29 I had a total knee replacement in Fredericksburg, and since getting out of the hospital I have been confined to home and managing to get around using a walker. I am slowly weaning off of the pain medications, and physical therapy will be a regular activity for several weeks, but there continue to be some issues in the City that need a bit of extra consideration and communication as well as some balanced information.
