If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then Scarlet Puncher Sherrie Clarkson, currently vacationing in Tuscany (and are we jealous!!!) must be feeling her head swell all the way in Italy. While she’s traipsing through the countryside, sampling wine and authentic Tuscan cuisine, and maybe even getting her butt pinched, we stuck-at-home Scarlet Punchers are enjoying her FaceBook postings and plotting our revenge (just kidding about the revenge part).
Six o’clock. But it’s really seven o’clock. Or is it? Whatever it is, it messes us up. They call it Daylight Savings Time. DST. Which just ended. By decree. What a racket. What a joke. To think one can actually save daylight. And now it’s given back to us… As we turn our clocks back. We gain an hour, they say. That’s darn near impossible. We just mess with our clocks. Like the Time Tyrants mess with us. My 100-year-old Seth Thomas clock is not amu ...
It really feels like fall. I am glad to get over Halloween. I gave up handing out candy because I got cold and gave the leftover candy to the grandkids. I always buy candy I don’t like so I am not tempted to eat it. I will admit that I bought a bag of chocolate candy but I am making it last because I usually forget it is hidden in the cabinet. The mini breakfast breads are due Sunday, November 11.
A Man and His Dog… This is NOT a story about a boy and his dog. Instead, it is a true account of Galveston icon Eddie Janek and his Rhodesian ridgeback, a canine companion who is always nearby when his 91-year-old master is on the premises. Without Brownie, Eddie would be “rattling around” in his self-designed Galveston Bay home which he and his beloved wife Doris enjoyed until she became ill a decade ago.
Easiest Pretzel Bites Ever! Courtesy: Budget Savvy Diva Here’s a recipe that’s so simple that it ought to be outlawed! A real “cheater” recipe for The Practical Baker, since it doesn’t require fussing around with yeast, waiting for the first rise, then the second rise and then cleaning up a good-sized mess when you’re done.
The holidays are just around the corner, and we have a great selection of Thanksgiving and Christmas books for patrons of all ages. We’ll have our Christmas books and DVDs out this week so that everyone will have time to enjoy them and get in the holiday spirit. Stop in and see for yourself! DVDs: Mama Mia!
New Heights You know that little voice in your head that tells you not to stand up on the tailgate of a pickup going down the highway, or lean way over the edge of the roof of a tall building, or walk up to a group of Harleys in a parking lot and sit on one, and pretend you’re riding it, making vroom vroom noises?
Recent Flooding Threatens Fall Revenues At a special called meeting of the Mason County Commissioners' Court on Monday, the main topic of conversation (by design) was how to restore access and use of the county roads after the recent floods. Representatives from FEMA and from the Texas Department of Emergency Services were in attendance to help provide guidance to the many regulatory hurdles awaiting the County as they face the expensive task of restoring the transportation infrastructure o ...
Mensa material Frank Zappa once said, “It’s not getting any smarter out there.” I think Frank was right. Recently, when Hurricane Florence was headed toward the east coast, a Facebook page asked people to sign up to fire guns at it. The plan was to line everyone up along the coast and have them all shoot at Florence at once, thereby scaring it off.
Washed Out In Mason At first I was encouraged to see Federal Disaster Funds were being pursued to rebuild our county roads. But after I saw the number of county roads that suffered major damage, I wasn’t so optimistic. Hopefully the funds will include monies to hire an outside firm (or two) to do the work.
