Gerry,
We live in a capitalistic/socialistic country. This mix seems to have worked very well for generations. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, FEMA, federal highways, public schools, USDA etc. are social programs that make our country strong.

Letter to the Editor and Mason Readers,
I look forward to the day when more members of our community remember the difference between informed opinion and inflammatory nonsense.

In response to last week’s unkind Letter to the Editor:
Yes, Beto lost...for now. And so did his authentic, impassioned, people-powered, unite the country, equality for all, grass roots agenda...which judging from the close race and votes cast, was admired by a whole lot of Texans. So I thank him and his hard-working campaign for all their effort.

While pumpkin is considered to be a “seasonal” food offering, I find that the taste of it appeals to me year around. If you want something a bit different and it isn’t quite Thanksgiving, give yourself some thanks and make up a batch of these.
As most of you know, the library will close at noon today and will reopen on Monday, November 26th. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!

Martin Luther is credited with starting what is commonly known as the Reformation movement, 501 years ago. On 31 October 1517 Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses to the door of the chapel in Wittenberg, Germany. Number 82 blasted the idea of ‘papal indulgences,’ in which people were allowed to pay money in order to gain forgiveness of sins, either their own sins or the sins of those who had already died, and were ostensibly suffering in purgatory.
Blessings at Thanksgiving…
In 1940, novelist Thomas Wolfe’s best known work, published posthumously, made a strong claim in its title: You Can’t Go Home Again. During a 10-day November visit to Texas, now Kansan Ray Hildebrand proved him wrong.
In effect, the composer of “Hey, Paula”--the number one popular song in the United States and free world early in 1963--took up where he left off more than 55 years ago.
Happy Thanksgiving. Our family is looking forward to a day of visiting with family and lots of food. Take time to count your blessings and be thankful for everyone and everything that you cherish.
There will be no class meeting at the Art United Methodist Church this week. The Men’s Choir will practice November 27 at 6.
The Community Choir Cantata will be December 2 at 6 at St.
Thank goodness.
Thanksgiving.
Thankfully it’s here.
Thank you one and all.
Thank yourself.
Even if no one else does.
Go ahead.
Give yourself a pat on the back.
Or a nice hug.
No hubris implied.
Nor vainglory.
Just acknowledging yourself.
For being there.
Or knowing when to leave.
For pitching in.
Or staying out of the way.
Thank yourself.
For yourself.
For all that you’ve done.
And for doing nothing.
Just being.
Giving.
Receiving.

Fall Arrives in Texas with Force!
For the last couple of weeks, I've been enjoying the cooler nights and warm days that are typical of November in Mason. We all knew it wouldn't last; but, I certainly didn't expect it to end with quite the finality that it did on Monday night.
The cloudy skies of the morning were soon joined with 20-30 mile per hour winds out of the north.
