Old-Timer Doubts Thomas…. The caller was gracious, complimentary and far more composed than some of the senators who “duked it out” during the recent Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Before long, though, he uttered an often-chilling word: “however.” It usually suggests a change of direction, usually downward. “You made a mistake in last week’s column,” he advised. Oh, I could argue being “half right,” but he had good reason to “doubt my Thomases.”… ***** ...
Wet Texas J. Frank Dobie, probably the foremost chronicler of Texana, didn’t introduce me to the vagaries of Texas weather, since I grew up in it, but he did enlighten me to the saying, “Nobody but a fool or a newcomer will prophesy weather in Texas.” My dad used to watch the weather forecast on television every night, even though it was often unreliable.
National Friends of the Library is next week, and I want to say I have phenomenal Friends! Membership has grown tremendously since the first year I was here in 2011, and these folks are workers! They do a bang-up job of raising funds, offering the English class, and advocating for the library, and I appreciate every single one of them!
One Hour Rosemary Focaccia Bread courtesy: flavorthemoments.com We really enjoy Italian food and prepare it in some form or another at least 3 times a month. Italian food cries out for a bread to accompany it, so, over the years, I've accumulated quite a few recipes for Italian bread. Some of it is a bit “fussy” to prepare, but this recipe is right in the Practical Baker's wheelhouse: simple, just a few ingredients, and ready to put on the table in about an hour.
It has been years since many of the streams in Mason County have flooded outside their normal stream channels. For just as many years, dry conditions and drought have caused a die off of trees along those stream beds and waterways. The small floods we have had were never quite enough to raise the water high enough to reach all that debris, so it continued to accumulate, year after year. Then, on Sunday night and on into Monday morning, Telegraph and Junction got eight to ten inches of rain.
You get what you wish for. And more. A stitch in time saves nine. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. And don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Look before you leap. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Silence is golden. Give an inch, they’ll take a mile. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. And don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Now that’s a horse of a different color. Never bite th ...
This has been another crazy week at the Ceynowa house. John spent a few days in the hospital after a fall on Saturday. He is recovering. This getting old stuff is not as much fun as I anticipated. It is hard work to stay healthy and keep going. Cookies for the Kairos Prison Ministry are due at church on October 14th.
Uncle Mort and Biases…. “You can look it up.” Late sports writing giant Blackie Sherrod was fond of using this quote. He repeated it often in a half-century of columns, attempting to keep sports in the context of a larger world. He died years before the “Google Age,” but if he were still clacking out journalistic brilliance on his old upright typewriter, he’d take his observations--and bluffs--even further. Yep, old Blackie would have enjoyed field days of “fun-poking” a ...
Maine events A while back I started getting daily emails from the Bangor Daily News, for some reason. Someone evidently decided I needed to know what was going on in and around Maine’s capital city, I guess. And before I get three or four angry emails telling me Bangor’s not the capital of Maine, let me point out that I don’t care. At first I thought about deleting the emails and trying to unsubscribe, but after glancing at a few of the headlines I changed my mind.
The rain held off just long enough for Old Yeller Day. We had a good crowd, more dogs than last year, and the costumes were great! I have many, many people to thank. I appreciate Judge Bearden and the County Commissioners for allowing us to continue this great tradition. I’m so grateful for our sponsors: K9 Energy donated the license to show the free movie; Sunny Star Kennels donated the trophies and the Best Travis Lookalike prize; Tractor Supply in Brady donated the rest of the prizes.
