Giants Who Wouldn’t Pull Rank… Sometimes, selfless decisions are made without fanfare, yet come to light years later. We’re running short on noble decisions of late, yet those made decades ago by two prominent Arizonans--both affectionately “adopted”--are noteworthy. Senator John McCain’s recent death resulted in much reflection on his life of service to his country, including his imprisonment in Viet Nam for more than five years.
The rain has been wonderful. There have been some inconvenient moments when we were traveling to doctor appointments in the rain, but we are so grateful for the generous rain. The German Hymnfest will be September 23 at 3 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Castell. Class Meetings continue on Wednesday evenings with soup at 6 and the meeting begins at 6:30. Happy Birthday to Dennis Bryan and Robert Hall on September 17th. Make yours a good week.
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s confetti with wings. No. It’s little butterflies. Or moths. Hundreds of them. Aloft in the wind. Like ashes blowing hither and yon. Never alighting. Perpetually flying. And flitting. And fast, too. Moths, as compared to butterflies, are generally smaller. And less brightly colored. Thus spake Trusty Webster. But moths are chiefly night flyers. So there goes that. Must be butterflies. Small, drab day trippers. Flut ...
Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” are risking it all in September. Yes, in defiance of good sense and triple digit temperatures (as of this writing) we are stepping out boldly, as befits our mission statement, and planning to dine al fresco for our September gathering on Mary Carlman’s delightful deck. When I was a girl in Connecticut, back in the dark ages, we bought our “back to school” clothes in early September, and many of us couldn’t wait ...
In her 1989 hit, "Come from the Heart," Kathy Mattea sings the following lyrics: You’ve got to sing like you don’t need the money Love like you’ll never get hurt You’ve got to dance like nobody’s watchin’ It’s gotta come from the heart if you want it to work. Though the other lyrics are fine, the one line that has gained traction over the years and continues to reverberate throught culture, with some changes, is "Dance like nobody's watchin'." In our lives, we carefu ...
Being introduced to wine for the first time can be a challenge for most people. For that reason, many will start with a sweet wine which offers a comfort level for sipping that doesn’t come with a bitterness sometimes found in a drier wine. By starting with a sweeter wine you can start to develop your palate for wines that have a higher tannin content found in red wines. How is the sweetness of a wine determined?
Super Easy Bread courtesy: the Spruce This is a loaf of bread that you can make up even if you’ve never tried to bake one! It’s very easy and straight forward and would be a good introduction to someone who’d like to try baking bread but is frightened off by the idea using yeast and doing any kneading.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a month designated by the American Library Association (ALA) for libraries nationwide to join together to remind everyone—especially parents, caregivers, and students—that getting a library card can be the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning. It costs nothing to get one and takes only a few minutes to fill out the form.
S. As in, September. The 19th letter of the English alphabet. From the Greek sigma. A borrowing from the Phoenicians. I wonder if they want it back. “Pardon me, but that S belongs to us. And we’re tired of lithping.” But sigma is the name of the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet. Not 19th. According to trusty Webster. Makes your head Spin. S. September. Around the Square. The “S” word. A game to play when you’re feeling Silly. Or Smart. After pl ...
Happy September. This year is marching by quickly. Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have rain showers and it will feel like fall. The Mission Team of the Art United Methodist Church will meet at 6 on September 10. Class Meetings continue on Wednesday evenings with soup at 6 and the meeting begins at 6:30. Now is the time to start working on your shoeboxes for Mexico.
