Felons amok Several years ago I started using game cameras. Granted, I was a little behind the times, since game cameras had become popular many years before. When friends asked me why I didn’t use them, I would always say it degraded the challenge between the hunter and the prey, and that I was a purist.
Old Harry’s Kitchen Advice… The late Harry Truman, whom we always regarded as “unbridled” until here lately, advised folks affected adversely by the heat to stay out of the kitchen. Well, I wasn’t listening, and/or failed to take notes. I find myself in the kitchen more often in later years, for reasons others of a certain age may understand. My wife and I implement a simple to-each-his-own system for many meals.
The rain has been wonderful. The mold has been messing with my sinuses. I hear this from others in the community also. I don’t remember having allergies when I was young. I think this is another of those “old people” things that I am discovering. The Board of Regents of the UT system named Dr.
Beef. It’s what’s for dinner. Or supper. Or lunch. Maybe even breakfast. Where’s the beef? All over town. Beef. From Old French “boef.” According to trusty Webster. Beef is a full-grown ox, cow, bull, or steer. Especially one bred and fattened for meat. One can also beef up a football team. Go Punchers! Or have a beef with somebody. That’s no fun. Have some beef tea instead. Supposed to be good for you. Then there’s beefcake. Which has nothi ...
Meals I have delivered Meals on Wheels for several years and I feel it is one of the best things I do to help those people in need. I understand this Mason program needs some help. Starting this month, when I pay my city bill my wife, Carol Jean, and I are going to include a $100.00 check to keep this program going.
Recycle The last time I dropped on my recycles I received the sad news that our Mason Recycle Center can no longer accept the miscellaneous plastics that they have been receiving from residents for over 20 years. Thank you, Mason, for being a leader in recycling and for recycling more per capita than big cities like Austin for many years. After reading the article in the paper last week, I stopped recycling plastic containers and bags listed.
Today is always an emotional day. Just as the generations before me will never forget December 7, 1941, my generation and those that follow will never forget September 11, 2001. This year's marking of that day falls, just as it did 17 years ago, on a Tuesday. It was a day when Americans realized that the world had changed and that we were vulnerable.
Crescent Cherry Cheesecake Cobbler courtesy: thecountrycook.net This recipe is right in my wheelhouse: fast, easy, inexpensive to put together, and a real crowd pleaser! You can toss this goodie together in less than an hour, and I'm thinking it will take a lot less than an hour have it disappear from your table. Ingredients: 1 eight ounce tube crescent rolls 12 oz.
There’s pretty much nothing more important in Texas than water. Any way that we can conserve our water or find ways to survive another drought is well worth knowing, in my book. So Pete Van Dyck’s program “Drought Proof Texas” tomorrow evening is one to attend. He’ll begin at 6:00 p.m.
Cracked up My friends at peta have come through for me once again. I hadn’t heard from them in a while, so I was beginning to wonder if they’d gone over to the Meat Side. But during the past few weeks I’ve received emails from several readers letting me know the animal rights organization is every bit as petty, irrelevant, and ignorant as ever.
