Our summer reading programs begin next Monday, June 4th, and we’re so excited! They are for children who will be in pre-K to Grade 5 next school year. Read with a Dog will be at 11:00 a.m. each Monday, and Read to Swim is from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursday.
In Memory The couple had not been overly religious, but when their son was about ten years old they decided they should start taking him to church. Their first Sunday morning back, he sat quietly through the sermon in unfamiliar territory, fidgeting only when absolutely necessary. They decided to attend evening worship also, and the boy resigned himself to another long, boring ride in the pew.
Mere Words Don’t Stand a Chance… They came up with clever nicknames, many of them adopted after much head-scratching and some the result of “blind hog luck.” One came on opening day of Yankee Stadium in 1923, when baseball darling George Herman (Babe) Ruth blasted one of his longest-ever homeruns. What a happy day for Yankee fans in the “house that Ruth built!” He became “the sultan of swat.” Fans also called him “The Babe,” another grandiose moniker honoring his 22 co ...
This was another blessed week. It rained. My gauge had almost half an inch. The wind was blowing so hard, I don’t think much went in the gauge. Several people at church reported more rain, but they also had hail. Grandkids picked up lots of sticks, and Scott came over to mow grass.
Fine. Be that way. O very, merry month of May. June’s in the wings. Just waiting to come onstage. So go ahead. Leave. You didn’t last very long. In fact, you sped right by. Or so it seems. But you packed a wallop while you were here. You brought rain. And wind. Tons of wildflowers. And tornados (to some). And 90-degree days. You brought the worst pollen in years. And allergies. Asthma. Pneumonia. Bronchitis. Flu. And the infamous cough that last ...
Here Come the Graduates of 2018! Last week, we were focused on one goal - - get the 2018 Graduation Supplement to press by Friday. This is one of those special publications that requires SO many people, all working together at breakneck speed. And, we have to also work around the impossible schedules of over 50 teenagers who are having trouble concentrating on any one item for longer than five minutes. But, we all got it done. Whether it was Kelly Guice getting me the senior portraits ( ...
217 words Gun Control It’s not comfortable to change one’s views, especially when law supports that view. In the case of the Second Amendment, surely it is time to acknowledge its intent and how that intent has been twisted. It is obvious to me that Amendment II exists to protect the right of a state to maintain a “well-regulated militia.” That has always been how A.II was understood and this “collective” approach was validated in a 1939 Supreme Court decision.
Buckeye Brownie Cookies courtesy: Delish.com These are scandously good cookies. The base is a boxed brownie mix of your choice, and as you know, there are lots of choice out there! I selected Dunkin Hines Extra Moist, but any of them will do, and the original recipe calls for the 19.5 ounce “family size.” I’ve made them with the regular, 18 ounce size as well, and cannot tell any difference.
Since high school graduation is coming up soon, I was thinking about those former students who may not have gotten their diplomas. The library partners with Howard College to provide online GED preparation. We’ve had several people use this program and pass the tests, so it seems to be effective preparation.
The circle of life (and death) Ron White says you can’t fix stupid. Nature sometimes tries anyway. For example, three friends recently found a couple of kittens in a San Antonio alley, and decided to take the little furballs in and adopt them. A day and a half later, after numerous failed attempts to get the critters to take kitten milk, and no telling how many bites and scratches, the three gave up and called San Antonio Animal Care Services, who came and took the kittens off their hands ...
