“THIS DOG’LL HUNT: An Entertaining Texas Dictionary” by Wallace O. Chariton (1989, Wordware Publishing, Inc., 1506 Capital Ave., Plano, TX 75074) is a collection of “Texasisms” -- metaphors, similes, and figures of speech that come from the mouths of citizens of our state. Most of these originated from people who didn’t even know what a “simile” was.
Easy Ranch Quick Bread
If you like a savory bread every once in a while, you'll be sure to enjoy this one. As you can tell from the ingredients list, there's lots of different things going on; and if you don't care for some of the spices, just drop them out of your mix, and either add others or leave it alone.
Camels Making a Comeback?...
The Geico insurance people had the chance to keep camels in front of folks, but lost 15 percent of their credibility when they chose a gecko instead of a camel for their mascot several years ago. I thought their ad showing Caleb the Camel clopping through the office to ask workers if they could guess “which day is it” to be pure advertising genius.
Changes in the Condition of the Earth During One Man’s Lifetime
The first part of David Attenborough’s book, “A Life on Our Planet” consists of a number of sub-sections based on what was going on in Attenborough’s life at that time. The first section began in 1937 when he was an 11-year-old riding his bike around to explore the English countryside and seashore.
Creamy Cajun Chicken Pasta
This zesty Cajun-style pasta is full of lean chicken, peppers, and onions. I’ve never met a Cajun recipe I didn’t like or a Cajun that wasn’t a fabulous cook. Creole and Cajun cuisine have been mistaken to be the same, but the origins of Creole cooking began in New Orleans, and Cajun cooking came 40 years after the establishment of New Orleans.
Our household is facing a month of birthdays. Half of our group have birthdays in the next thirty days. We hope to be able to get together and celebrate but we accept that not all may be able to attend. I will still make cakes and food to cater to the birthday kid. Texas weather is a mystery all the time.

Snow. Two times in ten days. 2020 was a bad year for many people. But, 2021 is starting out really strange. The snow was beautiful. Our yard was a winter wonderland. But it all started melting by midafternoon Sunday. The Art Methodist Church cancelled services as an unofficial poll showed few were willing to get out.
How Do Animals Survive the Winter? Part 2: Keeping Warm and Active
Our recent snow storm stimulated some readers to ask me how animals survive the cold weather. In last week’s Science Corner, I discussed animals that migrate to warmer places for the winter. This week, I’ll discuss species that don’t leave cold weather behind, but find ways to stay active through the winter.
Rosemary-Lemon No-Knead Bread, Courtesy: Mark Mitterbaun
This bread is not a classical Practical Baker recipe because it takes a few steps and some careful attention to detail. It also requires a bit of planning ahead, since the dough must rest for 12-18 hours. But if you decide to make it, I assure you that you will agree that it is well worth the effort.
A Life on Our Planet by David Attenborough
Back in April I wrote a column titled “A lifetime Involved with Nature” about a TV series documenting David Attenborough’s life as a worldwide nature explorer and film maker and things he could teach us all. I am repeating much of that column below to introduce Attenborough to everyone who doesn’t know about him. I am doing this because he has since written a book, published this past spring, entitled “A Life on Our Planet” He is 94, and has a unique world-wide view of the condi ...
