Marking Milestones.... In the time that I've been at the Mason County News, I've celebrated two major milestones in my life. Twenty years ago, I celebrated turning 40 years old. Ten years later, I was roasted and feted when I turned 50 years old. This Sunday, I will reach another milestone birthday as I turn 60 years old. In our modern world, it's unusual to stay in the same job for any substantial length of time.
Remember The 2020 Presidential election is looming and will be upon us before you know it. I would like to express some things for people to thoughtfully and prayerfully consider. There are two things about this country that are unique in the world and very beautiful. #1- The People are the owners of their government and are its sovereigns.
Oppie and the Opry (The recent Ken Burns PBS-TV series on "Country Music" reminded me of a 1990 visit to Nashville and the following thoughts.) "If Grandma Oppie (AH-PY)could see me now!" That was my first thought as I stood on the stage in Nashville in front of the microphone with the red-on-white inscription, "WSM-Grand Ole Opry." One of my earliest memories of my Grandmother Birk was her sitting in her rocker in the ranch house, crocheting while listening to the music of Roy Acuff ...
“One Bowl” Peanut Butter Cookies Just like biscuits, rolls and bread recipes, I’ve never found a peanut butter recipe I didn’t like! And this one, which is quick and easy, doesn’t dirty up a lot of dishes, and makes over a dozen cookies, is right in the Practical Baker’s wheelhouse. With a preparation time of 5 minutes and a bake time of 12 minutes, you can have these yummy delights out and ready to eat very quickly. Ingredients: 1 cup creamy peanut butter (original recipe c ...

DVDs: Christmas Getaway A Perfect Chord The Kitchen Once Upon a Christmas Miracle A Veteran’s Christmas Queens of Mystery: Series 1 Luce Audiobooks: A Fire Sparkling ...
Lives Starting Out and Finishing Up… At neither occasion is humor expected, but when it’s an added bonus, the comments eliciting laughter are the ones most remembered. Current examples were separated by some 50 miles and 74 years. Both were in churches--at a memorial service in Farmers Branch and at a parent-child dedication in Burleson…. ***** There were many smiles--and some outright belly laughs--at the memorial service for Louis Stone, 78.
Easy Chicken Milanese We are going way south of the border with this week’s recipe. The Milanese (in Italian “cotoletta alla Milanese”) is a dish common in South America countries. The Milanesa was brought to South America from Italian immigrants between 1860 and the 1920s. This dish is also similar to the Austrian Wiener Schnitzel. The Milanesa is where generic types of breaded meat fillet (beef, chicken or veal) are dipped into beaten eggs, salt and other condiments, according to ...
Mason Scrambles to Winterize Over the weekend, everyone was carefully watching the forecasts for Monday through Wednesday of this week. On Monday morning, the details of that forecast were being tweaked and fine tuned by forecasters, and we all watched them carefully. Monday morning, it was still a comfortable 62 degrees when I got to the office.
Veterans Dear Gerry, My Best Veteran’s Day After celebrating Veteran’s Day for nearly forty years, I finally had a best Veteran’s Day. Sunday night I spent the night with my daughter, Kathryn, and her family so that I could attend the 7:30 am celebration of Veteran’s Day at Eanes Elementary School where my grandson, Colton, 11, is in the fifth grade. This would be my last celebration there with Colton since he is moving up to middle school next year.
