Leo Osterhout celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday, Sept. 17. He is a resident of Henry House in Blanco and was joined in the celebration by his son, Danny Osterhout, who is also pictured. He was born in Independence, Kansas, a century ago. Osterhout is a veteran of World War II, joining the Navy in January 1942, soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Pinot grigio and ale might have been a factor in the homicide of a local Army veteran and former Blanco firefighter last month, according to police in an arrest affidavit that was obtained by the Blanco County News. James “Jim” Mayer Harris Jr., 63, a Blanco attorney, allegedly shot and killed his 25-year-old stepson, Donald Boumans, after an altercation on Aug.
The Blanco Classic Car Show took place on Saturday at the Blanco State Park. With no chance of rain and blue skies above it was a great day for the car show. The annual event didn’t take place in 2019 or even this year in May, which is the month when the show is regularly scheduled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and military veterans from across Blanco County will parade past St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 218 Pittsburg in Blanco, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The event is for a special blessing in celebration of St. Michael, the patron saint of first responders and the military. The day coincides with the Feast Day of St.
On Sunday, the rebuilt sign welcoming visitors to Blanco County and proclaiming it the home of President Lyndon B. Johnson was installed at the intersection of RR165 and RR2325. On hand at the installation on Sunday were Bernard Mollberg, local coordinator and facilitator of the project; Art Brooks, master carpenter; and Adrian Landon Brooks, the muralist who painted the sign. “We have been delighted with the local support of this project,” Mollberg said.
In the fall of 1981, there was a group of 20 young men, that were gritty, resilient, talented, and determined to be the best Blanco Panther football team to ever step foot on this field. This team was never scored against in a district game and could hold their opponent on the goal line for four downs and not let them score.
The Blanco County Commissioners set the tax rate and adopted a budget at their meeting Tuesday morning. The commissioners unanimously set the tax rate ate $0.3900 per $100 in valuation. Maintenance and operations was set at $0.3425 and debt services was set at $0.0475. The tax increase for the coming fiscal year is $970,999, an 11.7 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.
It was arguably America’s most tragic war--pitting countrymen against each other--and it all happened just a few generations ago. One Blanco man, who is a National Park Ranger, spends his downtime researching Texas during Civil War so that he can bring history back to life with his books. “My books are about the soldiers’ memories of battles and camp-life; Each soldier in my books has written a fascinating account of the battles they were in,” said author Joe Owen.

Two long standing Texas banks, Hondo National Bank and Community National Bank will join to become TXN Bank, N.A. (Texan Bank). As announced in August of 2020, Texas Heritage Bancshares Inc, parent company of Hondo National Bank and Medina Community Bancshares Inc., parent company of Community National Bank, consolidated into the Texas Heritage Bancshares Inc.
