As a ninth grader I had the privilege of playing on the American School of Monterrey’s first football team. I didn’t really want to play but if I didn’t, we might not have had enough guys to play at all. I weighed in at a whopping 142 pounds and had never really played football before.
Have you ever noticed what grows along the water’s edge and in fields when nothing is purposefully planted and land is neglected? We encountered some of that today, here on the farm… The sun was shining on Sleepy Creek. It was a perfect day to tackle some improvements along the bank near the swimming hole.
Dear Editor: In your article about the Wildlife Rescue Ranch In Kendalia, it was stated “Not only do animals matter, they always come first”. To a certain extent, I agree with this as I love animals too, but there must be a limit. If you have too many of anything, trouble lies ahead, therefore, I am at a loss as to what happened to the 10,000 animals WRR treated in 2017. We raise goats and cattle in addition to the native animals.
“Dad,” said the voice on the phone, “I need your help to write a paper about the ‘Old West.’” My daughter, Tara, in order to improve her lot in life, had gone back to school at age 34. Because of my love for all things ‘western’, I took on the challenge.

A story has long been circulated that has been attributed to several sources including Aesop and his fables. It goes something like this: A young girl was trudging along a mountain path toward her grandmother’s house. It was bitter cold, and the wind cut like a knife. When she was within sight of her destination, she heard a rustle at her feet. Looking down, she saw a snake.
Did you know that in a single day on average, Texans generate 6.5 pounds of garbage? That’s a lot of waste! If this continues, all the landfills will be full in less than sixty years. What can you do to help reduce this number? Well, one easy way to help the environment is by recycling.

One of my favorite scenes from the first “Crocodile Dundee” movie takes place in New York City when a young hoodlum confronts the Australian crocodile hunter with a switchblade knife and demands his money. Dundee looks at the little knife with disdain and with a grin on his face says, “That’s not a knife.

While serving as Director of Fine Arts for a school district, I had the opportunity to accompany students to various art galleries and art museums, many of which featured the works of internationally renowned artists. I remember admiring a very large painting from across a room. It featured a quaint Italian city reflected in the waters of the Mediterranean.
Dear Blanco Community, Blanco Good Samaritan Center is grateful for the generosity of its donors. We thank you for your continued support. Without your contributions, we couldn’t support the Center’s mission to serve those in need in this county. We couldn’t run a food pantry, provide shelter or clothing or help with bills in emergencies.
Tips for a Stress-Free Garden If you wish to plant our own transplants, it is time to start your seeds for fall tomatoes, okra eggplant and peppers. Water your lawn and garden when needed to prevent plant stress.  Soak sod to a depth of 6-8 inches.   Water in the morning to avoid disease problems.
