Over the bounding buffet To cruise the Inside Passage from Vancouver, you first have to get to Vancouver. I call attention to the obvious because, for some reason, Vancouver happens to be located in a foreign country. Not that I’m complaining, but this seems to exhibit poor planning on someone’s part. When you arrive in Vancouver you have to go through ‘customs,’ which is a polite way for the locals to let you know they don’t want you there.
Mort’s Foibles on the Fourth… That my Uncle Mort is determined to keep his enlightened self-interest inflated to the max is a foregone conclusion. For more than a century, he has claimed much from Independence Day celebrations, since he and Uncle Sam share the same July 4 birthday. Mort, who turned 107 recently, has always chosen red, white and blue birthday colors, for example.
I hope you had a great weekend. There were many roundup activities. I joined daughter in law, Crystal, at her booth on the Courthouse lawn. I saw a bit of the parade from my shady spot. Then, after a food truck lunch, I went home for a nap. It was a great day. The joint vacation Bible school of the Lutheran and Methodist churches is next week.
Cash? Credit card? Debit or credit? No one writes a personal check anymore. Paper or plastic? In some places that question has disappeared. You bring your own. Or else buy a bag. Leaded or unleaded? That, too, has disappeared. No one pumps gas anymore. With or without fries? How would you like that cooked? Regular or decaf? Sweet or unsweetened? Questions, questions, questions. Wonder what the very first question was. “Any more beer?” Probably. The qu ...
Saddle Up, Parade Around, Crown Some Royalty, Dance Under the Stars.... Summers in central Texas and the Hill Country is full of fairs, rodeos, community celebrations and all out fun. For visitors and vacationers, it can be a bit daunting trying to figure out where to visit, and when, to enjoy all that is available. For anyone that is coming to Mason on the second weekend of July, all the stops have been pulled out, and the 55th annual Roundup should satisfy every desire and need they may ...
Fairness In Response to In My Opinion article from 7/3/19 Thank you for a well-considered and well-written piece in your column last week. Some were probably not aware of the FCC’s Fairness Doctrine and its removal in 1987. I was in the television business in Dallas in 1987 and recall changes beginning to happen in news reporting even before the Fairness Doctrine was removed. When CNN began reporting 24 -hour news in 1980 was a benchmark, in my opinion, for the opportunity for news to ...
English Scones courtesy: Texas Journey Magazine; Debbie Rice This nifty little recipe will allow you whip up some delicious scones using ingredients commonly found in your kitchen or pantry. Try these for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Putting on a pile of your favorite jelly or preserves will take them to the next level, taste-wise! Ingredients: 2 cups self-rising flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/3rd to ½ cup organic cane sugar (you can use the normal sugar you have on hand) 6 t ...
Don’t miss Ethan West’s program “Kayaking to the Gulf”! He’ll be here next Tuesday night, July 16th, at 6:30 to tell us about his latest adventure! Admission is free! We’ve had a great summer with the kids, and even though Read to Swim ends tomorrow, we have Miss Shay doing a special storytelling series for elementary-aged kids based on The Indian in the Cupboard, along with arts and crafts, on the next few Wednesdays.
Vancouver, eh? After flying from Little Rock to Chicago, and then from Chicago to Vancouver, my wife and I got on a bus with a bunch of others going on the same Alaskan cruise, to ride to our hotel. The first thing that struck me was how plush and comfortable the bus seats were.
