Hard time Several days before my wife and I were planning to leave for our Alaskan cruise, she sent me an article full of advice for people going on their first such trip. One of the items on the list was to buy a cheap watch and set it for ship time, which is usually different from local time wherever the ship happens to be, and certainly different from the time where you came from.
Not In My Back Yard… So awash are we in acronyms these days, we may start tossing them asunder at any time. Such drastic action carries with it results akin to “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.” Acronyms are everywhere, and youngsters using them--probably throughout the world--are rendering many “tried and true” acronyms obsolete. Welcome to July. We have had a rather mild summer so far. Yes, there have been some really hot days. Nothing I couldn’t handle with air conditioning. We celebrate Independence Day on July 4. Travel safely if you must travel. We plan to stay home. The Daniel Jordan family gathered last weekend to celebrate Fred Jordan’s 80th birthday.

The subjects were often quite trivial; but, in our young lives, they were of substantial importance. We all believed the rumor that Bubble Yum bubblegum was so soft and chewy because it was made from spider eggs. We questioned if Paul McCartney was dead, because on the Abbey Road album, he was out of step with his b ...
Landfill A Landfill is not like a Tuxedo I’ve rented a tuxedo twice in my life...prom 1964 and when I got married. What I learned during my 73 years is it makes sense to rent a tux, but not a landfill. Shipping trash 160-mile round trip to rent space in Brownwood’s landfill every time trash is dumped is crazy.
Waste Monday night’s Commissioners meeting was a grass roots example of democracy in action. It was so moving to see our community come together, in a positive way, over a mutual concern. It was apparent that the landfill decision currently under consideration brings out strong feelings. As well it should. The city forefathers were thinking about us, the future generations, when they made certain Mason would have a method in place to address the inevitability of trash. It is understanda ...
