Swims with sardines Maybe you’re having a bad day. Maybe one of your tires was flat this morning, or you burned the biscuits at breakfast, or a plane crashed into your roof, or your daughter called and told you she’s going to marry a writer, or something. Fine. But you’re not having as bad a day as Rainier Schimpf had recently.
Walmart’s Big Goof… If Walmart can offer the best-ever recipe for turning out world-class lemonade from lemons grown in their own orchard, folks will line up to buy it, whether or not they’re greeted at the store door. The best decision-makers of the nation’s largest private employer must have been absent when the decision was made to eliminate greeters at their store entrances.
Spring Break is in full swing. Grandparents in our community are excited to have their grands come visit. We have grandson, John. He found a list of jobs that Grandma needs done. He is a good sport and helps me so much. The Art United Methodist Church will have a special song service on Sunday, March 17, at the 11 am service.
St. Patrick’s Day. Coming up this coming Sunday. Hooray, hooray. Callooh! Callay! They chortle in their joy. And drink green beer. Wear green clothes. Green being associated with St. Patrick. Due to the shamrock. He supposedly used the three-leaved plant to explain the Holy Trinity to pre-Christian Irish. See, St. Patrick was actually British. Invading Irish kidnapped him and kept him as a slave. However, he wasn’t a saint just yet. Anyway, he managed to escape a ...
Deeper in the Hill Country! Starting with this issue, we have moved all our printing to a new location. We had been using a printer in Marble Falls; but, as of today, we are now using the services of the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung. It has not been a quick process. For the last few weeks, we've been in contact with HZ folks who work in the printing, insertion and mailroom departments trying to determine what processes are going to be changing.
Crescent Roll (½ Recipe) courtesy: Delish.com We really enjoy crescent rolls and, as the Practical Baker, I prefer making my own rather than using the canned rolls out of the refrigerator section of the grocery store. I think that you’ll agree with me that these rolls are much tastier and are well worth the effort.
The Library Book Club is open to everyone and meets on the last Tuesday of every month at 5:00 P.M. in the Stribling Room to discuss the month’s book. The March selection is Christina Baker Kline’s A Piece of the World. The library has the novel available in print, on Kindles available for checkout, on audiobook, and in eBook and downloadable audiobook formats through Overdrive.
Cowabungle Maybe I’m just getting too old to remember my youth, but I don’t recall doing stupid, dangerous things when I was a kid, just because someone dared me to. Not that I didn’t do stupid, dangerous things, but I usually came up with the ideas all by myself. These days it seems kids have to be challenged before they risk their lives for no apparent reason.
Leaders Greatly Missed… One was nationally renowned, known for the spoken word--the other, for words written down. The former was radio newsman Paul Harvey; the latter--as eloquent in print as Harvey was on the airways--was William Arthur Ward. They were genuine to the core. During these days when too much is called “fake news,” these inspirational giants deserve “top shelf” status, the kind one could take to the bank…. ***** Both were day-brighteners, and they both died ...
We are hoping this is winter’s last stand. I am writing this Sunday evening. The thermometer has been dropping hourly this afternoon. We have a nice fire in the fireplace. My woodpile will probably be gone by tomorrow evening. Maybe I was too vocal about not wanting to move the woodpile. Lenten Lunches begin March 6.
