Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who absolutely insist on enjoying life to the fullest, are getting out of town! In case that statement conjures up visions of Sheriff Nixon and his trusted deputies escorting us to the city limits, shotguns in hand, dial back the crime channel tv show images to something a little more realistic.
Small towns are disappearing from the American landscape. Today, something like 80% of the state population now live in urban areas (more than double the percentage of a century ago), even though most people say they find little appeal in big city living: too much traffic, the frantic pace of life, alienation from neighbors, high crime rates, etc.
Texas redbud.
Ringing in Spring.
They’re out there.
And Spring is officially here.
If you ever plan to motor west.
Take the highway that’ll show you the best.
Take Texas State Highway 29.
Go west, young man or woman.
A glorious one awaits you near the county line.
From there to Menard it just gets better and better.
They’re mostly on the right.
On the north side of the highway.
Wonder why that is.
Maybe the bar ditch stays wetter (and cooler) than on the south ...
The flowers are beautiful. We love this season because of all the new life, flowers, baby animals, and the unique green of a mesquite tree when the leaves pop out. The allergies are another story entirely. The mass of pollen has made my allergies go crazy. I will view the flowers with a mask on.

The Adventure Continues…
They met in college at a time of comparative innocence. Father Knows Best was the rage on TV; Ken and Barbie weren’t yet a couple.
The TV show and the famous dolls--one might suggest--were bookends for a real life romance that began 65 years ago on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.
A 1953 graduate of Fort Worth Poly High School, the former Sue Cherry spread her wings at H-SU.
Just the other day
He was born just the other day, during a war that was taking place halfway around the world. Proof, maybe, that life would still go on, that good things happen in a world where so much bad occurs. The beginning of something impossible to understand or describe, something that has to be experienced, lived.

Chess Pie

This is another very old Southern recipe; sort of a variation on the Chess Bars recipe that I will be sharing you. ½ cup butter
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

The Surprises of Spring....
Every year, along about January, people in the hill country start walking around with their heads down, focused on the ground. Occasionally, they dig the toe of their shoe into the ground and examine what they find. They move on, and repeat the same actions again and again.
It is the annual search for the state of the bluebonnet crop!
By January, the distinctive green plants that will grow into the stunning blue flowers have begun popping up all over the land ...
