Some of you may have met Eric H. Heisner during July’s Rodeo Roundup. Eric will be in the Stribling Room of the library at 6:30 tomorrow evening to speak and sign books! He is an award-winning screenwriter, actor, and filmmaker who has a special affinity for the Western genre. Beginning with his first novel, West to Bravo, he continues to broaden his skills as a teller of stories from the mythology of the American West.
You are what you ate last We seem to be running short on a lot of stuff lately. According to a website called ListVerse, there are several important commodities that are in meager supply, such as sand. Yes, sand. The site claims we’re running out of sand, which is used to make concrete, glass, asphalt, toothpaste, and beaches.
What’s in a Hot Dog?... We’ve long been led to believe that we “can’t know the players without a program.” However, it’s generally agreed that they are needed for sports purists who want to identify all of the players, from the “stars to the scrubs.” At the State Fair of Texas in Dallas--where they feature three football games annually during the event’s three-week run--attendees gobbling foodstuff on the midway may need programs to know with specificity what’s going d ...
By the time this is published, we hope the weatherman’s prediction of cooler weather will have come true. Summer came late and is having trouble going away. Kairos cookies are due October 13. Instruction sheets are at the back of church. John Koock is involved in this ministry and will give you more information, if needed. Class Meetings continue on Wednesday evenings.
You get what you wish for. And more. A stitch in time saves nine. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. And don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Look before you leap. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Silence is golden. Give an inch, they’ll take a mile. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. And don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Now that’s a horse of a different color. Never bite th ...
Fall Activities Heating Up While Weather Cools Down... In Mason, football and cross country are in full swing. Last weekend, we had Old Yeller Day and the Lions 5K/10K. We've had dove season, and the archery season has started. All it takes is a quick glance around the Mason square to know that we've got a steady flow of visitors taking advantage of the attractions that Mason County has to offer.
Welcome, October. Welcome. Or make that Oktober…with a k. If you’re speaking German. Swedish. Danish. Norwegian. Or Indonesian. No matter how you say it, it’s here. Good ol’ Autumn-leaves-falling-crisp-morning-air-October. Well…sorta. Welcome, Fall. No matter where, it’s the same. Cooler. Colorful. The heart of Fall. The beginning of the decline into Winter. Although for some that’s already here. Octubre. Ottobre. Shi yue. Yep, even in C ...
Did you miss me last week? John took another little helicopter ride and stayed in the hospital a week. We are now home. He is doing well. I am recovering from stress and dirty laundry piled up. The best part was a visit this weekend from granddaughter Amber and great grandson Tanner.
Legal Problems Another Lawsuit for the City I’ve attended nearly all the city commissioner meetings since 2016, including the hastily called “special meeting” on Sept. 24 convened for the purpose of engaging legal counsel to respond to the lawsuit brought by Blue Oak Engineering for non-payment of $60,000. Because Daniel Hinckley is a principal in Blue Oak Engineering, Mayor Hinckley recuses himself from all matters concerning Blue Oak and Commissioner Pledger, as Mayor Pro-tem, t ...
Driver Responsibility This morning (Friday 9/27) I was walking my dog on Pecan St., just north of Bryan. A little white dog came running out from a house on the east side to meet/greet us. We kept walking. When we hit the creek, we were passed by a small white car traveling slowly south.
