Worm choppers My favorite humor columnist, Dave Barry, used to mention his ‘research department,’ Judi Smith, from time to time. Judi is an actual person who actually works for Dave, evidently. I know that because once, when I sent Dave an email, I got a reply from Judi. She was very cordial when she indicated she might not contact the authorities if I would quit bothering Dave.
With yesterday’s ribbon-cutting, Camp Discovery is officially open! With a teepee, giant buildings blocks and planks, boat, play kitchen, marimba, rocks to climb, and more, your youngsters are sure to find something to spark their imaginations. The weather’s cooling a bit, too, so why not spend a little time outdoors?

Gun Control Gerry: As the number of victims from mass shootings of innocent people by deranged individuals increases, the debate over gun control rages on. Those on the political left who would like to eliminate private ownership of guns in an attempt to stop the slaughter ignore the fact that a gun has no will of it’s own.
Saying Goodbye to a Quiet Man This morning, Connie, Steve and I will say goodbye to our daddy, Jerry Gamel. Daddy was a quiet man with simple tastes and uncomplicated needs. In conversation, he was prone to relating detailed stories that were full of names and details that reflected how he had spent a lifetime wryly observing everything around him.

Divided we fall Some of my earliest memories are of sitting on the floor in front of a 13” black & white television, watching grainy, poorly focused video of the assassination of John F. Kennedy, played over and over. Since I was a few months shy of my third birthday when that event occurred, it’s possible that what I remember are reruns of that horrible crime, televised during the months that followed.
When Phones Aren’t Friends… A majority of us have drawn lines in the dirt, emphasizing the point beyond which we simply will not be pushed by pesky, ever-encroaching technology. Most of us gradually fold, however. In retreat mode, we still draw lines, but they are evermore faint, each drawn with diminishing enthusiasm. I was a stubborn hold-out when smart phones came along.
We have lived in our home for 41 plus years. We had a new and unexpected mess this week. We have had wild hogs come to visit and leave a huge mess in our yard. Hopefully, we can find a solution soon as they are very destructive. I would suggest that the people in town STOP putting corn out for the deer.
