Beef. It’s what’s for dinner. Or supper. Or lunch. Or dinner. Maybe even breakfast. Where’s the beef? All over town. Beef. From Old French “boef.” According to trusty Webster. Otherwise known as a full-grown ox, cow, bull, or steer. Especially one bred and fattened for meat. One can also beef up a football team. Go Punchers! Or have a beef with somebody. That’s no fun. Have some beef tea instead. Supposed to be good for you. So say the British ...
Is It Advice,,, or an Influence? In our lives, we are called upon by family members and by friends when they are dealing with difficult situations. They come to us seeking our perspective on their situation. They come to us for emotional support. And, they come to us for advice. But, what is it that we actually give them? So often, the predicaments they are sharing with us involve us, even if just tangentially, which starts to cloud our ability to give impartial advice.
Icebox Rolls courtesy: Amy Purcell It’s pretty hard to make too many of these rolls, but go ahead and try! My advice is to hide them and then dole them out, a few at a time, until they’re all gone. Then make some more! This is a an old fashioned recipe, using shortening, but, as noted, I substituted butter.
If you’re interested in tracing your ancestry, then mark your calendar for next Tuesday’s program by Texas General Land Office research lead researcher Kevin Klaus. Attendees will learn techniques for tracing their ancestors using GLO land grant files, as well as methods for researching German records overseas. The program will cover new material found this year after visiting archives in Wiesbaden, Monchengladbach, and Dusseldorf, Germany.
Heated debate Astute readers will recall past mentions in this space of Florida Man, the fictional superhero channeled by news tidbits from the Sunstroke State chronicling his amazing exploits. Some of my favorite headlines from this year so far have been, ‘Florida Man Gets Stuck to Prepped Drag Strip Surface at the GT-R World Cup,’ and ‘Florida Man Chews Up Police Car Seat After Cocaine Arrest,’ and ‘Florida Man Accused of Robbing Chinese Restaurant at Finger Point.’ One of F ...
Welcome to September. We had a pleasant surprise to start September. When we went in to eat lunch Sunday at a local restaurant, it was sunny. While we were eating, rain fell. We got quite damp running for the car. That is a good start to any month. The Art United Methodist Church will celebrate Grandparents Day on September 8, with a covered dish lunch after church.
S. The 19th letter of the English alphabet. From the Greek sigma. A borrowing from the Phoenicians. Think they might want it back some day? And Sigma is the name of the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet. According to trusty Webster. Makes my head Spin. S. September. Around the Square. The “S” word. A game to play when you’re feeling Silly. Or not. After playing, you’ll Soon wonder why you agreed to in the first place. Or was that Second place? Amazing h ...
How Do We Look to Them? On Thursday night, the Mason Punchers will meet up with the Wall Hawks for the opening game of the 2019 season. The first anomaly is that the game is going to be on a Thursday night. The second anomaly is that the game begins at 7:00 rather than 7:30.
Gerry, Of all your editorials I have read since beginning my move to Mason, I must say I especially appreciate the one in yesterday’s edition (Aug. 21, ‘19). My years as a religion opinion writer—all clearly personal editorial content—has taught me that many in our current culture seem to be unable to remember, or maybe never learned, the nature of an editorial.
Italian Batter Bread courtesy: Complete Book of Breads This recipe requires no kneading, so for those of you who are “knead-averse,” this will be right in your wheelhouse! It has been called the “mother loaf” by Italian bakers because it is so basic: yeast, flour, salt and water. It produces a crackly crust and a coarse, open texture.
