No Knead Beer Bread courtesy: Chef John
I’ve made beer bread for years, and I have always used a recipe that called for “no kneading;” just whip up the batter in a bowl, pour it into a baking dish, and let ‘er rip. This is a bit more work to make the loaf, but the resulting product is terrific, and the loaf of bread is a bit larger than the traditional recipe produces. Ingredients: 1 ½ teaspoons of dry yeast 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour, divided ½ cup warm water (100 degrees) 1 can or bottle of beer of your choic ...
Re-Visiting a Champion…
It is tempting--ever so tempting--to claim authorship of the headline introducing a column written a dozen years ago. To make such a claim, however, wouldn’t set well with my conscience, even if no libel charges took me to task. The account detailed travails of a then 15-year-old Alabama girl who lost a leg to a cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2000, then the other to the same disease in 2007.
Slow Cooker Sweet Jalapeño Turkey Thighs
With Thanksgiving around the corner and everyone getting back in the groove of school or just a hectic fall schedule, I started going through my crockpot recipes. I don’t have very many that call for turkey so I thought this would be something good for a change. I usually serve with a pasta salad.
Happy Thanksgiving. This will be a different time for many families. The Covid virus has kept many families at home not wanting to be exposed to the virus or possible exposing family to the virus. We will have a small gathering. We would love to see more of our family but we will have a phone visit instead. Please keep the Mason Ministerial Alliance in mind when helping others this season.
Goodbye 60... Not My Best Year...
A week from today, November 24, I will turn 61. My 60th birthday last year was full of promise and excitement for the future. Needless to say, it was not really a stellar year. My friends and family threw a big 60th bash for me. It was tinged with the memory of my dad who we had lost a couple of months earlier.
Thanks for the Turkeys
"One of the hardest things for me to believe about the Bible is that there were only two turkeys on the Ark!" fumed old pastoral friend Tex Luther. "There had to be more than that to produce all the turkeys I've dealt with lately in my church." "Having some problems, are you?"
Quick and Easy Bread Sticks courtesy: Sara Hennigan
As the name implies, these are quick and easy, and will be consumed by the dozens. They do require a bit of kneading, and they are a bit of a mess to make, but the results are well worth the clean-up! Ingredients: 1 cup of Greek, plain yogurt 1 ½ cups of self rising flour (That’s it, folks; that’s really all there is!) Process: Preheat oven to 500 degrees Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl Dump out onto a well floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes, adding lots ...
An Election of Entanglements…
Labeling the recent national election as one of “entanglements” may be the kindest of descriptions. But, it’s a start. Even the golden throats of radio and television news often got their “tangs tongueled.” Oops, I mean “tongues tangled.” At one point, a Dallas radio newsperson claimed that “Vice President Widen’s lead is Bidening.”… ***** My aging Uncle Mort, wishing he could stay in bed with covers over his head for the balance of November, says he’s never he ...
Skillet Ground Beef Stew
With this colder weather makes hungry for stews, soups and chilis. This ground beef stew can go from stove top to your tabletop in 30 minutes. The Dijon mustard gives this dish an extra kick! I usually do corn on the cob and a cornbread mix, to go with it. 1 lb.
That's Not Me,,,, Or You!!!!
The last week has, to use understatement, been very stressful. Though all of us like hearing that the results of an election went the way we had hoped, the lack of clarity and the wavering of leads during this particular election drove many of us to absolute distraction. For all intents and purposes, the results of most races are now known, though some Congressional and Senatorial races will have runoffs to determine final winners.
