Up to Here…
When my aged Uncle Mort called the other day, I figured he wanted me to hear his election rants. Instead, he told me his TV has been “muted” since political ads took over most channels several weeks ago. “So far, Maude and I are making it fine, particularly if we remember to wear blinders atop our masks when we go to town,” he said.
Autumn Chicken
You know I have to throw in a “Crock Pot” recipe every once in awhile. This is one of my go to recipes when I feel like I’m in a cooking rut. The aroma when you walk in the door will make your mouth water. Serve with some noodles, salad and garlic bread and you will win over family and friends and warm a body up on a cold night. 1 can (14 ounces) whole artichoke hearts, drained 1 can (14 ounces) whole mushrooms 12 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 jar (6 ½ ounces) marinated ...
The world is right again. My hour of sleep was restored and I feel much better. The only problem is that we will repeat this loss of time to save time fiasco in the spring. The Art Feed House will host a Deer and Antler Art Exhibit featuring local artisan, Bridget Langdale.
Counting Up the Last Things...
The annual Hunters' Guide is inside this week's paper. It's a healthy 56 pages and, I think, does a really good job of presenting Mason at its best for all those camo-clad visitors that have started their annual fall migration. We've worked with Macy Ledbetter of Spring Creek Outdoors for many years now to provide really good articles about deer and wildlife for our readers.
The print on canvas is titled “America’s Vision of Liberty.” In the generic landscape, overlooking a valley, there are 20 symbols of America’s founding and heritage such as the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, the Capital building, the 10 Commandments, the Bible, and “Old Glory.” It also depicts founding figures such as Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Lincoln and Sitting Bull. This patriotic rendering by the artist, larry Dyke, was given to President Trump by the a ...
Opening Day Is Just a Few Days Away
It had been a bad year for deer blinds on the Birk's Red Hill Ranch. When you have 14 of these small, enclosed hunting stations scattered around the pastures you expect a certain amount of upkeep. But this year had been ridiculous. For example: there was the case of the toppled tower blind.
What a Difference a “Y” Makes…
Google gets the last laugh, probably far more often than we know. Include one letter more than needed to “Google” a subject turns research to clabber quicker than political candidates can call their opponents liars. (Seems like mere decades ago that such comments were tenderized, usually beginning with sentences like, “My worthy opponent deals loosely with the facts,” or maybe, “He is known to spend much of his time in the company of ‘terminological inexactitudes’.”) I digre ...
We are having beautiful fall weather. I see a few leaves changing colors in town. There is a chill in the air some mornings. Our dog lets me know if it is cold outside. She wants right back in. I don’t know how she will act when winter gets here. The Art United Methodist Church is gradually returning to normal.
So, Why Do You Do It?

In the weeks since I announced my retirement from the newspaper at the end of this year, I've had lots of conversations with people who are curious as to my plans. Put plainly, it's a blank canvas that I eagerly anticipate painting in the coming years. Financially, I'll still need to do something to keep income rolling in; but, I'm not desperate to immediately step into something new. After the questions, those same people often comment on how much they'll miss my weekly column in the paper ...
