The 2015 Panther football season came to an end in Bastrop this past Friday as Blanco was defeated by the East Bernard Brahmas 42-6. The Brahmas jumped out to an early lead despite 3 first half turnovers and then continued their dominant play to close out the game. In the first quarter both teams had trouble hanging on to the ball as each team's opening drives ended in fumbles.
One of Blanco's long-standing businesses, Blanco Gardens, is closing due to the health issues of owner Pete Foegelle and his wife Cheryl, who has been the manager of the popular garden center since 1998. New owner Amelia Lintner will re-open the business in February as gardeners plan their spring landscaping and gardens.
The Blanco Volunteer Fire Department took possession of its new Brush Truck last week thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service. The grant was initially for $200,000 and a large brush truck but after examining the number of responses made using the brush truck over the past 3 years, department officials decided that a smaller brush truck, and the associated $100,000 grant, was much more suitable to actual needs. The Blanco County Commissioners met on November 11, 2015 for their regularly scheduled meeting. The first discussion item on the agenda was the transfer of funds from one budget line item to another to purchase a motor grader. The transfer was for $13,710 and the county received a payment on Monday from the Juvenile Probation Office in the amount of $13,000 in unused funds that came from the money that the county provided to the Probation Office and will help offset the cost of the purchase.
After allowing Van Vleck to be the first opponent to score on the Panthers in 5 weeks and the first to take an early lead, Blanco settled down and went on to defeat the Leopards 18-7 to claim the Bi-District Championship and advance to face the Taft Greyhounds in the Area round of the play-offs. The Leopards scored on their first offensive drive of the night on an 8 yard run to take a 7-0 lead following the PAT in the first quarter of play.
The Blanco Panthers made quick work of the Natalia Mustangs this past Friday to close out a perfect 10 and 0 regular season with a 41-0 win at Natalia. The Panthers picked up over 350 yards in total offense, while the defense posted is fourth consecutive shut-out in district play. In the opening quarter of play the Panthers took control early as Blanco scored three times.
The Blanco Independent School District held its regularly scheduled board meeting on Monday, November 9 at the Blanco High School Library. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the board approved the minutes of previous meetings, ratified expenditures, and reviewed financial reports, enrollment reports and the Superintendent’s report. The Blanco Masonic Lodge has announced that the annual Earnie R. Davis, Jr. memorial "Care and Share Dinner" will be held on Saturday November 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or until the food runs out. The Lodge is located on the S.W. Corner of US Hwy. 281 and Eleventh St. Each year local Mason's provide a full Thanksgiving Dinner to the elderly, shut-ins and the local Blanco Community residents through the free event.
This past Monday, Blanco High School hosted the Hill District FFA Leadership Development Events. 14 schools from across the Hill Country were represented by more than 300 students with 48 of those being from the Blanco FFA Chapter. Overall, Blanco won 1st place in 8 different events while also placing 2nd in two other events as all 10 of these teams will be advancing to the Area VII FFA LDE's next Wednesday.
The November 2 meeting of Blanco's Planning and Zoning Commission was well-attended by citizens who have felt the effects of zoning and signage ordinances. Three pastors from the Blanco Ministerial Alliance—Bobby Leggett of Trinity Lutheran Church, Carlos Cloyd of Blanco United Methodist Church, and Bill Gernenz of First Baptist Church—asked to be exempt from fees for signage advertising special events which, in Cloyd's words, "support the community."
