Eleven years after the Civil War ended, 40 Texas ranchers concerned with cattle rustling met in Graham, and formed an association to fight theft in the region, known today as the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
“In 1877 when the association was formed, this part of the country was a mess,” TSCRA Special Ranger Mike Barr said.

A truck hit a power pole next to the Texas Regional Bank drive thru at the corner of Main (US 281) and 4th St. at 9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16, 2017. The power flashed off for a few seconds on that grid. Pedernales Electric Cooperative crews from Canyon Lake and Marble Falls repaired the pole and restored power to nearby businesses and homes.
“We were without power from the time of the accident until 7:30 a.m.,” said Ramona Covey, Texas Regional State Bank vice president.
Blanco Independent School District played host to Lexington for the Homecoming football game last week, and the festivities concluded with a dance Saturday night, Oct. 14, 2017, sponsored by Project Graduation. Homecoming activities took place throughout the week, including a pep rally following Wednesday’s parade, half-time celebrations and the crowning of 2017 Queen Mia Albrecht, nominated by the National Honor Society.
For Blanco County Game Warden Sam Smith, the start of hunting season has him back on land, after patrolling the county’s rivers and nearby Canyon Lake by kayak and boat, March through August.
“The population of the county seems to triple when deer season starts,” said Smith.

I was honored to represent the city at the annual Texas Municipal League conference in Houston last week. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the issues and challenges that other cities are facing, along with presentations on programs and initiatives that are working.
The fact that Houston could even host the conference six weeks after Hurricane Harvey is a testament to the resiliency of that city as well as the Lone Star state.
Thirteen Blanco High School senior girls comprise the 2017 Homecoming Court, and one of them will be crowned queen on Friday night at halftime of the Panthers’ varsity football game against Lexington at Panther Stadium.
The Blanco Cowboy Church has been saving and working toward its vision of a covered arena for nearly 17 years.
“Our vision for the covered arena is part of our ministry to the Blanco community, our youth and the surrounding area,” said Arnella Calhoun, church founder and pastor. “It’s all for the kids.
Jon and Jan Brieger first landed at the Blanco square 25 years ago, when they opened their pottery store at 408 4th St. The store was next to the Blanco Hardware and Equipment Store, and later housed a health food store.
