Keep Blanco Beautiful members Pete Powell and Debbie Andry start work on the holiday lights that grace the Old Blanco County Courthouse and Bindseil Park in October. Andry said there is a lot of work done even before the lights go up. “We refurbish the displays and check the lights,” Andry said.
The City of Blanco conducted a groundbreaking ceremony Monday, Dec. 11, 2017, kicking off the new Wastewater Treatment Plan construction project for 2017-18. The plant is being constructed by Payton Construction, Wimberley. The project has been designed by Jones-Heroy & Associates, city engineers. Citizens should be aware that there will be increased traffic along the route leading from Hwy 281 to the plant, located at Fulcher St.
For the first time since 2009, Blanco was a winter wonderland after the city and county received one to two inches of snow that fell Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 late afternoon and into the evening. The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office reported that no motor vehicle accidents or motorist assist calls were made during this time, as most travelers hunkered in for the evening and the following morning, after Blanco schools had a two-hour delayed start.
The holiday season in Blanco features lights downtown, on the historic Old Blanco Courthouse, on the trail at Bindseil Park and throughout town. Adding to the holiday decorations are seasonal poinsettias grown locally and distributed throughout the state by two major Blanco flower growers. Klepac Greenhouses Klepac Greenhouses, founded in 1953, is run by third-generation owners Jimmy and April Klepac.
The Panther basketball team started their season on Tuesday, Nov 14 with a 78-58 victory over San Antonio Southwest Legacy. Nick Sampeck fired in 31 points to pace the Panthers. Sampeck hit six of six free throws and contributed four assists. Tyler LaRue scored 25 points and grabbed six offensive and defensive rebounds.
Blanco Volunteer Ambulance Corps (Blanco EMS) will add new hydraulic-assisted stretchers to two of its ambulances, improving patient care and decreasing the risk of injuries to first responders, thanks to a $25,000 community development grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority and Pedernales Electric Cooperative. Blanco EMS is a nonprofit that provides emergency services to southern Blanco County.
After nearly four hours of deliberation in closed session, the Johnson City Council and Chief of Police Randy Holland came to a mutual agreement to end his employment at a special meeting held on Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at Johnson City, City Hall. Holland accepted voluntary administrative leave effective until June 13, 2018, at which time he will honorably retire from Johnson City Police Department.
